IIUM decision a step towards racial harmony
The International Islamic University of Malaysia has won praises for its decision to do away with the wearing of songkok and special headscarves during convocations for its graduates from now on. Malaysian Students and democratic Youth Movement (DEMA)- Ong Jing Cheng said:People have freedom to choose what they want to wear. Some students especially non-Muslims, feel uncomfortable in songkok and tudung. We are glad IIUM has opted for the traditional mortar board for all graduates. This means the universtity still consider students' opinion but this should have been done earlier.
In the past, the university argued that its rules stated that non-Muslim students are required to respect the Muslim code of conduct, comply with the university rules and not act in any way that might be interpreted as being disrespectful to the religion.
The issue had also been brought to the cabines and a consensus was reached that students, regardless of their relogion, should not be coerced into wearing the tudung
